In another two week's time will be our fifth wedding anniversary! As a couple, we would like to

thank God for each other.
Despite that we have made many mistakes and did things (which we have regretted after that) to hurt each other; we are glad that the Lord has sustained us. He gives us love and grace to forgive each other. He gives us strength and patience to move on. As a wife, I am always grateful for my hubby; he is truly a supportive, patient and loving husband. Thank you, dar ;)

Having Zhi Hang in our life reminds us how much God loves us! For Zhi Hang has brought so much joy into our life! Even though bringing him up and teaching him according to the ways of the Lord are always challenging; but his hugs and kisses, tears and kind words have never failed to warm our hearts. We love you, son :)

thank God for bad times.
We are reminded by the verse in 1 Peter 1: 7, "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."(NIV) For we believe that it is through these tough times that our faith in God is made stronger.

As a family who only depends on the husband's income, we can only declare that it is by God's providence that we could go through this year quite comfortably. We always feel that we are not lack of anything and are contented with the little that we have. God sent many kind people to pass us 'hand-me-down' clothing for the boy; many wise ladies have also passed us the recipes which not only help us to enjoy nice meals, but have also helped us to cut our spendings!

Thank God for how our parents' support through helping us to look after Zhi Hang, especially when both Eric and myself are busy with work and studies. They are so kind!

It is good to always take stock of what the Lord has done in our life; and because we have counted the blessings every year, it never fails to encourage us. This also spurs us on to make it our aim to live our life to honor Him!

Johore Trip

Recently, we went on a short holiday trip to Johore with our good friends. Our group has become more and more adventurous to explore this state in our neighboring country; as it really has a lot of nice and cheap food there!

Jurong Bird Park

The last time I had been to Jurong Bird Park was 30 years ago!!!! As for Eric, he said that he could not recall when was his previous trip, but he added, "It should be quite long ago too." Hence, we decided to bring our niece (who came to stay with us during her school holidays) and the son to the park. We were there from 10.45am to 3pm.
Compared to the zoo, the park was quieter and smaller. But it was en eye-opening experience for us to be able to see quite a number of unique species of birds there!

Learning to serve

As parents, we believe that it is important to start the child as early as possible to serve the Lord. The belief is best taught through our actions. So, if possible, the husband will bring the son to his work place and get him to be his little helper. Usually, the husband would give the son a short list of things to do. And the son would gladly do so, mostly because he knows that after he has done his work; his papa would reward him by letting him to watch his favorite cartoons on the lap-top. Even though at this point of time, the son's motivation is not a noble one; we are not discouraged. We knew we just have to keep on creating opportunities for him to learn to serve and then add in the reasons to explain to him why we are doing what we are doing. Well, it is not going to be easy, but at least the journey of learning to serve for the son has started.

Today, I had gone to the beach with the son; knowing the bright sunny day would be there for only a while. While at the beach, we took the opportunity to have a good sun bath! At the same time, we had fun playing with the sand too. We are glad to be out of the house, to enjoy the sun, the breeze, the sand and the company of each other. Yeah!

不再孤单了

我一向来都很享受与儿子在一起的时间；看他一天天的成长，心里是有万分的不舍。因为，他长大之后将会有自己的生活，那么与他共处的时间也将会越来越少。所以，我也不想太多了，把握现在，好好珍惜和他一起成长的每一天！

最近，我们都能感受到儿子的心情改变。自从他知道自己将会有个弟弟或妹妹之后，他好像变得更快乐; 好像感觉得到自己将不再孤单了(No one to play with me)。儿子的喜悦可在这里被感染到，他在每晚睡觉之前都会和我肚子里的胎儿说，“晚安！” 然后亲了亲我的肚子之后再去睡觉。

知道儿子将来会有一个知己和玩伴，令我们倍感欣慰。希望他们俩在将来能好好互相扶持，互相爱护对方。

Morning time spent with the son

Everyday the son would go to school at 11am and comes back at 2.30pm; for his class will end at 2.15pm. He wakes up around 8.30am every morning. So that means I will have quite a bit of time to spend with him before sending him to school. Usually, we will spend the first part of the morning eating breakfast together. Sometimes we will stay at home to eat; sometimes we would walk to a nearby hawker center or coffee shop to have a cup of milo with a plate of bee hook or etc.. I have also tried to fill the later part of the morning with meaningful activities such as reading, doing art and craft, practicing writing and even going to the playground to run and do some physical exercises with him. I really cherish these moments with him because he is really growing up too quickly. Hope that the times spent with him will become part of his cherished childhood memory.

We first got to know about this pre-bike from a close friend; and on our own we also did some reading to find out more about it. Since owning a strider running bike has many advantages, we decided to buy it for the son! The little one really enjoys riding on it :) and we are sure looking forward to the day when he is able to ride on a bicycle.

An act of kindness

Just two days ago, after sending the son to school and saw him settled down in the school hall; Adriel's mum came and she said the following to me.

"I just want to affirm you that I am very touched by what Zhi Hang had done to Adriel when he was feeling down. The form teacher told us that just a few days ago, Adriel was crying in class and he was feeling sad that no one wants to be his friend. So, when Zhi Hang saw that Adriel was crying, he went up to him and put his arm around Adriel and told him not to cry. I want you to know that my husband and me are very touched by your son's act of kindness. Thank you."

Tears were welling up her eyes while she was sharing that... and mine too. At that moment, I could only smile and assure her that it's all possible because of God's kindness to the children.

Both Eric and myself are grateful to God for His work in the son's life.

Recently, we have been learning about plants and trees with the son. So, we have used some teaching materials like what you have seen in the pictures to help him know more about them. We have also brought him to the Botanic Garden to look at the actual thing. Well, we are enjoying the learning journey with him as it always interesting to see and hear his responses to all that is around him!

He did most of the drawing for the two pictures, and we did the painting together. Currently, he is very good at drawing circles, but he is still experiencing some difficulties to draw the triangles. Nevertheless, I remain thankful to God for the son's improvement in his craft work:)

Fun at Bedok Reservoir Park

Just went to Bedok Reservoir Park with my mum and the children yesterday; realized we had not visited the place for quite sometime.

The air was fresh and the scenery was beautiful!

At the park, there were facilities for kayaking, dragon boating, and even fishing.

These pieces were imported to Singapore from the Berlin Wall.

The brood... five "Ongs" and one "Tan"!

During this trip, I had discovered that my eldest nephew had become more sensible; I would find him helping the younger ones when they needed him. Well done, ZJ!!

The children loved to pose for pictures:) (I just love the smiles on their faces) After an hour of fun, we went to a nearby coffee shop for dinner... while waiting for the food, we posed for pictures again...

A few days ago, I brought Ah Hung with me to attend an event organized by some Christian youth. The venue of the event was at somewhere in the east - it was far at the same time quite "u-lu". After we had reached the place and alighted at the lobby, we still need to walk for another 10 mins before reaching the chalet. As we were walking, suddenly Ah Hung turned to me and said, "Mummy, we are all alone now, you know." I was not surprised by the remark because, there was no one on the road but just the two of us. Ok, after hearing him said that, I tried to comfort him by saying, "Yes son, even though it may seem there is just the two of us on the road; we are not alone, because God is with us all the times." And his response was, "Yes, I know, mummy; God is everywhere!". I looked at him and wondered whether he really understood what that means. But at least he remembered what we have taught him.

Just the mother and son?

Recently I am being reminded that no matter how close my relationship with my son has been, it is not complete and will not do him good if he is not close to the father. This is because in God's creation, He has made the fathers to be the leaders of families. So, even if the mother is very active in teaching and disciplining the child, unless the process involves the active participation of the father; the child may never learn what true submission is. There is a chinese saying that describes the role of a mother very well, "相夫教子"; she has to "support the husband" and "teach the child". To me, it is important to support the husband so that he could be whom the Lord wants him to be, and to teach the child the way to live his life (to know God and obey Him, to respect and obey his father, etc), so that he will not sin against the Lord. Awesome responsibility, isn't it?!

May the Lord grant me grace to fulfill what He has entrusted.

An act of love

Eric has used some recycle materials to make the frame and he has even gone ahead to print out the photos and pasted each of them on the board. He said that this is his birthday gift for me! His effort has touched me greatly. Whenever I look at this, I would be reminded by his love for the family. What he does helps me appreciate the fact that everyone has his unique way to express love - i.e. just a simple act will do. Hence, I better stop complaining that he is like a piece of "木头” (wood) 了... hey.

Ah Hung learns to write

Ah Hung has learnt to write. When I first saw him writing out the different alphabets on the board, I was so excited! I am glad I was there with him to witness this significant milestone! The first video shows that he was writing an alphabet "G"; he still can't write the alphabet "B" well (esp. with the bottom being very fat and the head being very very small). But then, we will wait patiently for the day when he could master the writing of all the 26 letters; and wonder how it will be like when he could write a full sentence!!

Still trying to adjust

I have been into the third month of being a homemaker. As what many of the true blue homemakers will know, life is not as simple as just staying at home to look after the child. I am still trying to adjust to this new lifestyle - busy with household chores, bring the son to school and fetch him back after three hours, spending time not just for one or two hours with him but most of the day, etc. So, guess it will still take a while for me to perform the role well.

Meanwhile, I am enjoying the time spent in my course! For me these are good moments to de-stress. I am grateful for good and passionate lecturers who are unselfish to impart their knowledge of early childhood education to us. That three hours or so and some hours spent in doing the projects given, are times I really enjoyed. Furthermore, with what I have learnt from the course, I hope it can be used to help me engage my son in a more creative manner.

Ah Hung's first day of school

On his first day of school, Ah Hung did cry a bit and wanted me to accompany him into the classroom. Thank God that the teachers allowed that (there were only 2 parents in the classroom to stay with their kids, the rest of the kids were doing well without their parents). I was with him for 20 mins before he got distracted with the toys and then I was able to "sneak" out of the classroom.

In this whole process of preparing him for school, I have mixed feelings. The most of all is realizing that my son is growing up, that means, he is going to have lesser and lesser time with us. In 3 more years, he will be in primary one, then 6 more years he goes to secondary school, then ... really, what matters now is to cherish every moment we could have to be with him.

Another fifteen more days will be our 4th wedding anniversary (30 Dec 2006). The journey as a married couple has been challenging, but we are grateful to God for seeing us through these 4 years of happy and difficult times. During these few days, what else would be more appropriate but for me and Eric to take sometime to reflect on the marriage vow (and its implications) said in our wedding ceremony.

to be my wife/husband (A covenant of belonging, not a performance contract; its essence is relational),

to have and to hold (It is total; it is public, personal and private)

Bye bye my first school!

Ah Hung's last day in his first school was on 30 Nov. I had decided to bring him to bid farewell to his teachers and friends. We bought gifts such as cards and some cookies to show our appreciation to them.

Many memories did flash back as we take a quick look at the things and place that we pass by almost everyday...

The son's first school has one of the biggest space and number of children in our area (I think should be in Singapore too); the estimated number of children is around 200 in the centre (from infants to K2). The centre even has its personal playground for the children to do their physical activities.

This staircase has proven as a good work out place for parents who carry their kids up and down to school everyday.

In each of the card we wrote this, "Dear principal, teachers and friends of XXX... you shall always have a special place in our hearts." We are thankful for the caring staff of this centre who made our experience with them memorable.

My course project requires some photos to be taken of a child's physical developmental growth. So, I brought my camera along during one of the routine outdoor play with son. After a while, he asked to use the camera and here are some of the photos captured through the camera by him... you can almost guess which picture is my favorite, right? hee...

No one to play with me

Recently, Ah Hung keeps saying this to us, "mummy... no one plays with me...". Ah Hung is a boy who enjoys company. He has his favorite friends both in school and in church. He looks forward to play with his little friends. He also likes to go to EH or BH (our office) to look for different uncles and aunties to play the toy trains with him. He likes to talk to them about his trains.

He will only feel the gap when we bring him home. I think he is beginning to realize how come he is the only child at home and there is no other that is of his kind in the house. No wonder he talks to his toy trains so often nowadays!

Well, in the meantime, Ah Hung has to learn to wait for a sibling to arrive to be his company. Maybe he has to wait for a long time, or maybe the sibling would never come. But life will still go on for him (and for us). Do pray with us that one day, Ah Hung will let Jesus be his best of friend. For we know, the greatest companion that one could ever have in the journey of life, is none other than the Lord Jesus. So, won't you pray along with us for His will be done? :)

Making Funny Faces

Don't know since when, Ah Hung starts to make funny faces when having his pictures taken. As he grows older, he tends to be more expressive, not just on his facial expressions, but he is good in showing his willfulness too. Handling his responses is always challenging. Pray that we will not lose heart but will continue to teach him God's way. Like what Proverbs 22:6 has reminded us, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Our desire is that when Ah Hung grows up, he will not turn away from doing what is right to please God.

Why we like to have our meals together at home...

1. Can share about the day's happening with each other (sometimes got too carried away, we go into gossiping, complaining...oops). We will get Ah Hung to share with us about his day in school too. Yes, he is able to do so with not so fluent sentences.

2. To enjoy nutritious food. It's always a joy for me to see Eric and Ah hung finished up the food I have prepared for them (with love---------> less salt, less fat, etc).

3. To improve my culinary skill...haha, I have excuse to try out new recipes.

4. To be comforted by one another's presence and... the food.

5. To let Ah Hung has the opportunity to practice his table manners. We have noticed that whenever the food is served on the table, he would automatically goes into the toilet to wash his hands, push out his high chair and sit there and wait for me to bring the dishes out. I love his expression when he sees the food.

6. Where Ah Hung first learnt how to feed himself.

7. Save money (if there's proper planning at first)

There are many benefits of having meals together. Hence, no matter how busy Eric and myself are; we will try our best not to skip this.

My First Shepherd's Pie

Our Little Boy

One day when Ah Hung saw me mopping the floor, he asked for the mop from me. I was a bit surprised that even though we have never taught him how to use the mop before, he somehow knew how to do it! He could have learnt it through observing his parents' daily routine in mopping the floor.

Well, no matter what, this has served as a reminder for both Eric and myself that we ought to be more careful in our actions and speech, especially now we are both closely watched by a pair of little eyes.

National Day Celebration

My mom came over to my place with the nephews and nieces. Their presence has cheered my son up as they have proven themselves to be a great company. Ah Hung so enjoyed the time with them that after they had left, he was so emotionally disturbed that he cried and screamed for almost 2 hours. Sigh... poor boy.

Eric and myself had received a letter each written by my nephews and nieces; so sweet of them right?

I had made pizzas for them (to practice my skill...ha); and it turned out that my youngest nephew was the fan of my pizza! (He ate 2 pieces at one go, which was quite rare as he was picky when come to food)

I had learnt to made this blueberry yoghurt ice-cream from a website; the taste was quite sour-ish, so the kids didn't really like it, only the adults liked it :)

一个不怎么美的面包的故事 (Wholemeal Bread)

My 2nd attempt to bake a bread, inspired by the belief that it is healthier to bake your own bread. The process was even more difficult than making the pizza. I actually took 45 mins to knead the dough until it was not sticky but elastic!!! If I had used the stand mixer earlier, it might not need to take that long. Anyway, it was edible.

The outer layer of the bread was a bit hard; but the inside taste ok.

Learning through play

Mini-cabbage rolls with japanese noodle, potatoes and carrots. Ah Hung didn't really like the taste of the cabbage despite it's sweet and juicy and the meat was not overcooked. But he did eat the noodles, potatoes and carrots. Which is quite good enough!

I saw this recipe from HHB's blog and had tried once to make a pizza from scratch, but it was an unsuccessful attempt. So, today, I tried to make it again for dinner. The verdict? Not bad, the 3 pizzas were edible. I found a deep sense of satisfaction in making the dough, although the process was tedious. Because the taste of the crust after it was baked, was simply delicious! Will keep perfecting it though! Both Eric and Hung liked the pizza I had made for them.

LEGO Fun

Recently, we bought two small sets of LEGO bricks for Ah Hung. He is using them to build houses and cars, tractors and so on. Thus far, we could play these with him for two hours long. This game has encouraged much interaction between him and us; questions like, "What is this?", "How to do this?", and words like "Car!!", 'Wow!", "Thank you, papa!" etc would be heard during the play time. The putting of pieces together has also encouraged him to stay focus. I must say the game sets are quite worth the investment. (Reminder: as the pieces are quite small, do ensure there is supervision of your little ones when they play with these).

XY did well in her mid-year exams. We decided to encourage her by spending a day with her. First we went to Downtown East to catch a movie - Toy Story 3. Then we dropped by Escape Theme Park for some rides. As a family we were happy to be able to spend some time with her cause she is always a little niece who is precious to us. Pray that one day, she will come to accept the saving grace from the One who loves her the most. I have another 2 nieces and 2 nephews, may God's grace be extended to them too.

After we came back from dinner, Ah Hung ran to pick up his bag of bricks, poured them out and started to build his "train" and "McQueen" (McQueen is a cartoon character in the movie, "Cars"). It is a joy to see the boy starting to play on his own, enjoying those moments when he shares his little creation with us. From the end products, can you guess which is which?

This camera has been with us for almost three years. Accidentally dropped it during the Taiwan trip. Couldn't be used for taking photos but it's video function is still working fine. Has sent it to repair cos we just can't bear to part with it. Will keep it till it can't be used anymore.

Ever since I had contracted hyperthyroid and it had caused my right eye to bulge; I had been quite affected by it. As a result, I was very conscious about my look, especially after a picture was taken. All these uneasiness stopped after a regular check up at NEC. That day, as usual, I would need to take a lot of tests on my eyes. A senior doctor came to observe me and after went through the reports from tests; she said this to me, "... I am surprised that your vision is not affected despite that... this's quite rare you know."When I heard that, it then occurred to me that,"yah hor...I could have double vision or worst, lost my sight". But God in His mercy had decided to let me keep the sight so that I could continue to enjoy looking at His creation! All this did not happen by chance. Well, instead of complaints and grumbles, I should be grateful for His love and protection. Forgive me Lord for the discontented heart and the ungrateful attitude.

My father had passed away for almost 5 years. Went to his niche with Eric, Ah Hung and Eric's dad on Good Friday. During these five years, I thought about him; looking forward to the Day to be reunited with him again. I am really grateful to God for saving my father through the gospel of Christ Jesus. Without this hope, I can't imagine how I could cope with the grief. I pray that God will grant Eric and myself more of His love and wisdom to reach our family members for Christ; to cherish them while they are still with us. Really, it's a painful thing to know that some will not be there with us when the Day comes.

Morning Walks @ the sky gardens

As Tuesdays and Thursdays are my off days, I will usually begin each day by taking morning walks with Ah Hung around our neighborhood. On the way, we would pick up some fallen leaves and study their shapes, attempt to befriend some birds and then would also turn our attention to the ants and try to count them while they are busy crawling on the floor. It will take us about an hour to do these activities plus some others (e.g. cycling, ball kicking) together. I do cherish these moments with Ah Hung. And praying that through these, our relationship will grow closer and that he will also come to know the Creator of all these things which he has seen everyday.

Reunion Dinner

We thank God for a good time spent with Eric's family! Though the company was small (6 adults with a toddler), our appetite was rather big. During the two hours of dinner, we finished a medium plate of 'yu sheng', a medium pot of '盆菜', a plate of nice and juicy cod fish, a medium plate of fried 'mian xian' and a small plate of dessert; in between we gulp down three to four pots of 菊花茶! What a feast! (Yes, everyone went back with a bloated stomach)

Things we did as a family on the last day of 2009;

In the morning, went to meet someone to discuss about ministry matters, then stopped at a hawker centre in Kallang Bahru for breakfast. Then came home to take an afternoon nap, read newspaper, changed the old calendar to a new one. Went out for dinner at one of the shops which was new to us. I went to make a new pair of spectacles, then we decided to buy durians and bought four at one go. On our way back bought 2 DVDs - Ice Age3 and UP. Watched Ice Age 3 while eating the durians; Ah Hung didn't like the smell and taste of durians. Oh no! After the show, bath Ah hung and fed him with milk. Then we discuss about how to spend 1st Jan 2010... then here I am... counting down to 2010!!! 5 more mins to go!

I am reminded of this song... "And because He lives, I can face tomorrow! Because He lives, all fears is gone! And because I know He holds the future and life is worth the living just because He lives!" Personally, I don't really look forward to the New Year cos there are just too much of uncertainties to worry about. But the song reminds me that I don't have to be afraid as God is in control of all things!
